Is it Oily Skin or Seborrheic Dermatitis

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Louise Forrest Seborrheic Dermatitis is also referred to as Dandruff, Seborrheic Eczema and Cradle Cap used in conjunction with infants who have seborrheic dermatitis). It is a condition which is characterized by inflammation, itching, and scales which form on oily or greasy areas of the skin (for instance, the scalp, eyebrows, eyelids, sides of nose, behind ears, in middle body skin folds, and inside the ear). It sometimes has a red or pinkish tint to affected skin. Skin affected by this condition often looks oily and scaly. The actual cause of seborrheic dermatitis is not known but it seems to be genetic as patients who have it usually have family members who also have or have had it. The condition may be worsened by stress, fatigue, extreme temperatures, infrequent cleansing of affected areas, using personal hygiene products which contain alcohol on affected areas, oily skin, and obesity. Hormones may be a factor in seborrheic dermatitis as can a fungus called malassezia. This fungus, normal to the skin, can increase during illness, high stress, and other triggers. With such increases, skin problems result, including seborrheic dermatitis. Head Injuries, Parkinsons disease, stroke, and HIV have also been linked to this skin condition. However, seborrheic dermatitis does not mean that you have one of these linked conditions. This oily skin condition occurs most as cradle cap in infants less than three months old and in adults between 30 and 60 years of age as dandruff. It appears more in men than in women. Seborrheic dermatitis is not contagious, caused by poor hygiene, an allergic reaction, or dangerous to the patient. The biggest health issue associated with this oily skin condition is skin damage and/or open wounds caused by scratching. Broken skin from scratching can develop infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal); these infections are usually mild and easily treated but can be more insidious (such as staph infections). Treatment of the condition depends on the body part affected and the patients age: Dandruff generally has good results when treated with prescribed shampoos which may contain one of the following medications: salicylic acid, selenium sulfide, or pyrithione zinc. Usage is usually twice per week for the above prescribed shampoos, but may be three times a week if you are using an over the counter tar based shampoo. The tar based shampoos may be used daily when treatment is first begun; usage is reduced after the dandruff is better controlled. In addition to usage requirements, how you use the shampoos is also important. Massage the shampoo through very wet hair making sure it covers the scalp well, let sit for about 10 minutes, and rinse well with warm water. Topical corticosteroids in a cream or lotion form may be prescribed if the traditional shampoos do not control the scaly, oily condition. These are usually applied one to two times a day. In cases of seborrheic dermatitis appearing in adults skin folds, corticosteroids are usually prescribed in a cream or lotion form. Dosage is usually one to two times per day. Cradle Cap is usually relieved by careful cleaning, moisturizing, and massage (using a baby brush). Do not pick at the oily scales, let them loosen through cleansing and moisturizing then they usually come off when brushed softly with a baby brush. Picking at them or brushing too roughly can result in broken skin and the risk of infection. If you have tried this for several days and do not see significant improvement, you may want to talk to your babys pediatrician about the condition. Do not attempt to use over the counter shampoos (like the above mentioned shampoos) without consulting the doctor. Babies skin is extremely delicate and needs special treatment. When the oily scales of seborrheic dermatitis appear in skin folds on babies, very mild topical corticosteroids in lotion or cream form are usually prescribed. Normal dosage is once daily. While seborrheic dermatitis is greatly affected by oil gland production, it is not necessarily going to occur on everyone who has oily skin. Care for it is a combination of the care for other forms of eczema and the care regimen for oily skin. It is important to keep the area cleansed but not over cleansed and moisturizing is helpful in controlling this condition. Moisturizing the scalp is usually best done through good, moisturizing conditioners. Louise Forrest has created the ultimate FREE Health & Beauty guide. Wedding Hair Styles Do’s and Don’ts

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Willie Jones Your wedding is a very special day and you of course want everything to be perfect. There are so many things to do it can make your head spin. But, if you allow enough time to really research everything, then you are well on your way. In this article I want to address hair. It is important to get it right because it can make or break the entire look you are trying to achieve. Here are some pointers about hair in general and I wrote about it in an earlier article: -If you are of Asian descent, then the hair strands are round and thicker than all other types of hair with the exception of the red head who has the thickest hair of all. Generally this hair can be easily worked with and is often healthy looking and lustrous if the diet is good. -If you are of European descent with blonde or dark hair, then your hair strands are thinner. The strands are round to oval shaped. This type of hair is easier to curl or straighten. -If you are of African descent, then the hair strands are flat and that is the reason for the frizz and curl. This can be the most difficult hair to work with. Another important factor is the shape of your face. Getting the wrong cut for your face shape can be a costly and an agonizingly long mistake, especially when you are getting married. If you dont know what the shape of your face is then here are some tips to help you find out. Get out a measuring tape because there are four places you will need to measure, the length of your face and the width of your face in three places; across the forehead, cheek bones and across the chin. Once you have the measurements done, here is what to look for: - A round face is approximately the same length and width with the widest part at the cheek bones. Dont wear short hair cuts unless you can sweep it back and have fullness at the top and the hair closer to the ear. This will give your face more balance. You can wear your hair longer but make sure to keep the fullness at the top and below the chin line. Keep the hair around your ears close to the face or it will accentuate the roundness. You want to lengthen the face. - An oval face is longer than the width and slightly rounded at the forehead and the chin is a bit smaller than the temple. This face shape can wear just about any hair style, long, medium or short. Most models have this face shape and as you can see they wear all different styles. This is one of the face shapes that can pull off the slicked back hair. If you have this face shape then you might want to consider pulling your hair back and wearing your veil under the bun as apposed to the veil coming over the face. - A rectangular face is long and slender and the forehead and jaw line are about equal (even though the chin may be a bit narrow). With this shape what you want to accomplish is giving the face a more rounded appearance. Dont wear the hair too long and try and get more fullness around the ears and cheek bones. This shape can wear wispy bangs or be parted at the side. With the forehead being already high, dont put too much height on the top of your head and dont wear it too long. You dont want to give your face too much length. This shape does well with the veil over the face or the veil starting at the top with the fullness being around the ears and cheek bones. - A heart shaped face is wide at the forehead and temple and narrows at the chin. This face shape looks great with chin length hair with wispy bangs or parted at the side. You want accomplish balance by having your hair fuller under the ears and at the nape of the neck. A chin length bob is great. A short veil that is narrow at the crown and gets fuller as it nears the chin and past works well. - A square face is strong in the jaw and somewhat flat in the forehead. You dont want to accentuate the strong lines of the face so youll want to add width around the ears, maybe a part in the middle and you want to add height to somewhat elongate the face. Short to medium hair works well. If your hair is straight then try out some curl. Research well ahead of time can save you the agony of a wrong choice. Find out what you face shape is and start looking at magazines, go online and look at celebrity hair cuts and compare them to your face shape and hair type. Talk to your hairdresser and discuss photos that you like and what might work best for you. This is your special day so make it perfect! Organic Pesticides for Safer Living

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Gordon Hall USE ORGANIC PESTICIDES You do not need to buy costly chemical fertilizer or pesticide sprays. Some good pesticides come straight from your kitchen cupboards. This is a recipe for canola oil spray which suffocates soft body insects. Use one cup of canola oil and add to one gallon of water. Do not try to make it work better by using more canola oil, you could harm your plants. Garlic spray also kills your soft bodied insects, use one bulb of garlic and blend it with two cups of water, leave it overnight and strain, mix it with one gallon of water and spray all over your plants. If you have animals eating your plants, put some really hot peppers into your garlic spray, cut the hot peppers up finely and soak with your garlic overnight, again strain & mix with one gallon of water and spray all over your plants. Leave the seeds in when you add the hot peppers. Place your pumpkins and other curcubits on a bed of sand, snails and slugs will not cross over the sand, this way you save on buying slug and snail bait. :o) If you have powdery mildew on your curcubits, mix one part skim milk or nonfat milk to nine parts water and spray all over your plants. In New Zealand the growers are saving thousands of dollars each year with this recipe. It pays to use this recipe once a week as a preventative measure. Do not put more milk in this recipe than 1 in 9, or your plants will get a fungus. To kill flying insects use three to four tablespoons of ground cloves in one gallon of water, spray over your plants. A dusting of boric acid can eliminate cockroaches, apply where they hang out, as always (keep out of the reach of pets or children) Most of these homemade recipes need to be applied fortnightly for the maximum affect. Successful Online Dating

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Barry Ohman For those of you who have never bothered trying online dating, there is nothing to fear if you do things right from the start. You will find that honesty is the key to successful online dating and I’ll give you some hints as to how to go about doing this. To start with you have to choose an online dating site that suits your needs in which you are looking for in online dating. This involves a lot of factors which include sexual preference, ethnicity, age, and many others that will help you determine the online dating site that will meet your needs and requirements. Before you choose an online dating site it would also be wise as for you to check their alexa.com ranking as you need not to waste your time with unpopular online dating sites. You would also be wise to check out complaints about an online dating site as well; though you may find some complaints are the results of people not reading the Terms and Conditions of an online dating site prior to joining. Once you have found the online dating site that suits your needs and requirements, it is time for you to sign up and fill in your personal information for your personal profile. This is where you have to be honest with the information that you provide about yourself. If you misrepresent yourself with information that is untrue you will eventually be found out and it may cost you a potential relationship. You have to be honest with the information that you post about yourself as well for what you are looking for in a potential date that you may meet. It is in your best interest also to provide photos of yourself for your personal profile. Those that do not post photos with their personal profiles are more than likely not to get as many responses as those that have provided photos. You must provide photos of yourself that are recent as you will only disappoint someone if you appear different than what your photo showed with your personal profile. When you are writing your personal profile I would suggest that you write with some flare when describing yourself as well as what you are looking for in a potential partner. You should write to make yourself sound interesting to those that may take time to read your personal profile and may end up responding to you. If you are successful to make this far in your online dating quest, you will more than likely meet that special someone that you have being looking for. Best of luck and hope you are successful in your online dating endeavors. My name is Barry Ohman and my wife and I have started our own online dating website. How You Can Get Paid To Market Your Business

Friday, August 24th, 2007

By Greg Nicholls The first thing that I want to point out to you is that you can get paid to market your business and in this article, we are going to cover a couple very basic ways to do this. One way is AdSense it is one way to get paid for marketing and advertising, you have probably seen AdSense ads all over the place. What they are are content related ads that people pay to advertise for, the ad on the left side or right side of this website, it has a demonstration of what an AdSense Ad looks like. You will notice that they are content related ads, so typically the ads are related to the content they are placed around. This is an effective way for marketers to get their message and advertising into places they never would have thought to place an ad. Keep in mind that your competitors could essencially place an ad on your website if they know some keywords from your site and place some ads. Not to worry though, you can block some specific competitive URL’s to prevent this from happening. If you want to get signed up with AdSense, searh out “AdSense” on Google, sign up and Google will begin to send you money when people click on the ads you post on your websites, blogs, etc. Why do it? Since Google makes money when people click on the ads, they tend to give greater ranking to sites that have AdSense placed on their web pages, over sites that do not. . Another way to get paid for stuff while you market your site, is to be a referral for products you would recommend that people buy, like books and DVD’s; items that are relevant to what you are discussing on your website. For example, Amazon has a referral program and will allow you to setup a “Book Store” where people can go to buy the books you recommend and you get paid a small percentage. Go to Amazon.com, scroll to the links at the bottom of the page, click on “Join Associates” and sign up. There are many other affiliate programs out there, these are just a couple that I use that assist people in developing their business while keeping their costs down. The Homemade Spongebob Squarepants Game: Bob’s Full of Surprises

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By Gail Leino It is always fun to integrate characters, such as Spongebob Squarepants, into new games to keep your young ones occupied and here you will find a very simple way to entertain your children with an old foam pillow and a handful of sea shells. Having your children help you make this game will only add to everyones memories of what a great time was had by all. The creativity of an active imagination can find a game in anything. Often in Spongebob Squarepants show you will see Spongebob pulling hidden things out of his sponge. With this idea in mind, trying to integrate the game concept of memory with Spongebob as a base isnt too far fetched. Items you will need for this project include: An old foam pillow (yellow if possible) 2 big eyes Some doll clothes Scissors Small sea shells Paint Needle and Thread Using an old foam pillow as your game board, decorate the pillow to look like Spongebob. The face can be made with some big boggle eyes, a nose graphed from the back of the pillow material and sewn onto the front, as well as a big black mouth and two front teeth (possibly made from some felt). Some clothing similar to what Spongebob wears can be obtained from a childs old clothing remnants or some doll clothing. You can either pin them on or sew them. Now that the game board has been assembled, it is time to make the actual game. Begin by cutting several X marks down into the foam pillow in an orderly fashion. Be sure to cut an even number of slits and be careful not to actually cut any of the material off or to cut too deep as these slits will be used to create rows that will house small sea shell game pieces. Preparing the game pieces is very easy. Matching shapes if possible, gather enough small sea shells pairs to fill the amount of spaces you have cut into your game board. Using some paint (non-toxic tempra or something similar); color the shells to match their partners. You now have a very innovative game board that resembles both Spongebob and an all-time favorite, the game of memory. Unsecured Loans for Advances not Against Collateral

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Andrew_Baker]Andrew Baker Unsecured loans are offered without any collateral. This implies that a borrower will not have to part with rights on home or any asset for availing the loan proceeds. There are two categories of people who use unsecured loans. Firstly, there are tenants and non-homeowners who use unsecured loans out of necessity. The second group is of homeowners who have lately joined the users of unsecured loans. Homeowners traditionally were the customers of secured loans. Through secured loans, these borrowers were able to get hold of excellent deals, complete with a low rate of interest and easy repayment options. However, the apprehension regarding repossession of home was not to be shrouded under the attractive features. Though this has been accepted as no more than a myth, many of the regular customers of secured loans were dispersed as a result of this. These customers opted for unsecured loans. Unsecured loan providers do not get a direct stake on any asset. Even if borrower fails to pay the loan amount in full, loan provider cannot undertake direct action to recover unpaid amount. Compare this to secured loans, and you find the lender misses no time to liquidate asset in his possession. One only gets a little extra time when using unsecured loans. Beyond that even unsecured loan providers are going to initiate legal proceedings to recover the amount. Therefore, unsecured loans must be taken as seriously as one would a secured loan. Unsecured loans are advanced in the range of 1,000 to 25,000. The sum is relatively low in contrast with sum lent in secured loans. Therefore, unsecured loans are best used when the expenses involve lesser amount. Minor home improvements, footing holiday bills or debt consolidation form the most common uses of the unsecured loan proceeds. Unsecured loans are very adaptable to all kinds of personal purposes. For raising unsecured loan, borrower must preferably have a good credit history. This loan is lent against personal credibility of borrower in the absence of collateral. A borrower with bad credit can face difficulty in qualifying through high street lenders. For brokers however, this is an easy task. A broker is a mediator between banks and borrowers. When broker approaches banks with the application of borrower, they get a better response. Banks know that brokers may have undertaken tests of credibility; therefore, they lend to the applicant. When borrowing through unsecured loans, borrowers particularly feel the pinch on the clause of APR. APR or the rate of interest is generally higher in unsecured loans. The higher risk involved is to be blamed for the increased APR. Increased APR is inevitable and therefore reasonable. However, the premium over the reasonable APR that borrower have to shell is evitable. Borrowers can do two things in order to avoid paying unreasonable rates. Firstly, they must be up-to-date on the prevailing rates, lowest rates, rates according to credit circumstances and the different interest options in the UK. Secondly, borrower must accept the fact that it is not difficult to get good deals. Proper research is what is required to achieve these. Research nowadays is easier, thanks to the massive resources on the web. A person can view several loan providers products and gain important information about them; all for free and in a small span of time. Nowadays, borrowers application is received through the online mode. Loan providers have thus made the process of raising cash convenient for borrowers. It has also been convenient for loan providers, as they do not have to directly deal with the customer traffic. Unsecured loans have to be repaid between 5 to 25 years. Borrowers generally enjoy discretion on the method of repayment. The monthly or quarterly repayment method scores over other methods in the sense that the loan is successfully repaid and borrower is not over-burdened. Litigation Funding Is Here To Stay

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Wayne Walker By now, every personal injury attorney has heard of litigation funding - the non-recourse sale of a portion of a plaintiffs future settlement proceeds in exchange for cash today. In recent years, the availability and use of litigation funding has grown rapidly and most attorneys now recognize the need for plaintiff financial support. A 2001 survey by Lawyers Weekly asked a simple question: Should Litigation Funding Be Permitted? Of the 1,876 votes cast, 82.5% responded yes. However, reminiscent of the criticism faced by trial attorneys over contingency fees, litigation funding companies must respond to the same disparagements. Defenders of the status quo seek to brand litigation funding as profiteering by scoundrels taking advantage of the down trodden. They trot out such red herrings as champerty, usury and far flung theories of inherent conflicts to show how vexatious the practice really is. Sound familiar?Despite the criticism, we know the following: plaintiffs love it; defendants hate it; it is here to stay! Equal Protection Requires Equal AccessThe lynchpin for every privilege contemplated by our founding fathers and codified in our constitution rests in one simple principle equal protection under the law.Since 1786 when pamphleteer Benjamin Austin called it a pernicious practice, contingent legal fees have been criticized non-stop. Yet today, it is the most widely used fee agreement in the United States. Why? Simple because it works! The contingent fee system helps to achieve the goal of equal protection by facilitating access. It is axiomatic that there can be no equal protection when access to the court system is unaffordable by a significant segment of the citizenry. The entire raison detre for contingency fees lays in this basic access issue. So persuasive is this point that, over the years, courts, have systematically removed virtually every barrier preventing access to the court system. From contingency fees to attorney advertising to champerty, laws preventing access, in even the most indirect ways, have bitten the dust. Perhaps Judge Michael A. Musmanno said it best: “If it were not for contingent fees, indigent victims of tortious accidents would be subject to the unbridled, self-willed partisanship of their tortfeasors. The person who has, without fault on his part, been injured and who, because of his injury, is unable to work, and has a large family to support, and has no money to engage a lawyer, would be at the mercy of the person who disabled him because, being in a superior economic position, the injuring person could force on his victim, desperately in need of money to keep the candle of life burning in himself and his dependent ones, a wholly unconscionably meager sum in settlement, or even refuse to pay him anything at all. Any society, and especially a democratic one, worthy of respect in the spectrum of civilization, should never tolerate such a victimization of the weak by the mighty.” Richette v. Solomon, 187 A.2d 910, 919 (Pa. 1963). However, affording a lawyer is only one part of a plaintiffs challenge. A claimant must also have the ability to sustain themselves during the pendancy of their action. After all, what good is retaining an attorney, if you cant afford the basic necessities of life? How are financially stressed plaintiffs to sustain themselves during the pendancy of their litigation which may be the cause of their financial condition in the first place Litigation FundingOne answer is litigation funding. Being able to stay the course is a prerequisite to fair treatment and this simple transaction can help level the playing field with a well-heeled adversary. This fact was recognized by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in the 1997 case of Saladini v. Righellis, (426 Mass. 231, 234) when it noted: “We have long abandoned the view that litigation is suspect, and have recognized that agreements to purchase an interest in an action may actual foster resolution of a dispute.”Other superior courts seem to be persuaded by the Massachusetts court including the Supreme Court of South Carolina which relied heavily on Saladini when it abolished champerty in Osprey, Inc. v. Cabana Limited Partnership, 532 S.E.2d 269 (S.C. 2000).In fairness it should be noted that the Supreme Court of Ohio held a different view in Rancman v. Interim Settlement Funding Corp.99 Ohio St.3d 121, 2003-Ohio-2721. However, Ohio is in the minority and the doctrine of champerty may one day meet its final well-deserved death sentence at the US Supreme Court when the applicability of the 14th Amendment is determined. (Bennett v NCAAP 370 S.W. 2nd 79 82 (Ark 1963)) What are the real issues? Aside from 15th Century English Law, what are the real issues today? The perception is there is nothing in it for attorneys, at least not immediately or directly. Providing information to the funding company, administering the execution of the contract and observing the lien are all a nuisance for plaintiffs counsel. However, despite this, more and more PI attorneys are forging relationships with funding companies because their clients need it, and they have found that reputable experienced companies can prove to be an invaluable resource. Cost The most common criticism is the cost. The average amount paid for bodily injury insurance claims suffered in motor vehicle accidents is small - less than $10,000. Thus, it should not be surprising that the average litigation funding contract is also small. Most contracts are for $1,000 to $5,000. Consumer financial products have relatively fixed transaction costs meaning that smaller deals are nearly as costly as larger ones. It follows that, because of their small size, the average fees on litigation funding contracts will unavoidably be high. That having been said, the very growth of the business will resolve the issue of cost. The marketplace will set prices just as it does with contingent legal fees. Once the there is enough experience for the true risks of these transactions to be widely known, investors will price the risk to a corresponding level. Already, fees have dropped significantly. Only a few years ago it was not uncommon to find fees of 15% per month compounded with no cap! This is now rare. There are three basic fee methods used by most funding companies: 1. Monthly interest or fees. These can range 3% to as high as 15% per month with no cap. 2. A percentage of the recovery. 3. Flat fees that are capped and may or may not have a discount for early payment. (Attorneys must beware of large fees at closing that serve to raise the true cost significantly) A valid concern is that, with monthly fees rising with no cap, clients might be tempted to take a settlement just to stop the fee increases. This not only injures the clients chances of a fair recovery but also limits the attorneys fees. Fortunately, capped fees are always available in the market. While the marketplace place will continue to drive price levels toward equilibrium, it should be comforting for those with no faith in market forces to remember that, in the final analysis, the court has the final say and can set aside abusive fees. Schlesinger v Teitelbaum, 475 F2nd 137, 141 (3rd Cir), cert. denied, 414 U.S. 1111 (1973) On this issue Saladini is very much on point:This means that if an agreement to finance a lawsuit is challenged, we will consider whether the fees charged are excessive or whether any recovery by a prevailing party is vitiated because of some impermissible overreaching by the financier. Is it really a loan in disguise?Litigation funding contracts are almost universally non-recourse. The definition of a loan is blackletter law. If any part of the principal or interest is contingent on an event that is more than a mere colorable hazard, the contract is not a loan. A challenge on the grounds that the requisite degree of hazard is not present would have to be adjudicated case by case, each case being unique. Bear in mind that the funding company is subordinate to attorneys fees and costs, statutory liens and prior liens. The risk for an attorney is substantially better than for the funding company that is last in line. Many regulatory authorities from attorneys general to banking commissioners have reviewed the practice and taken no action. It seems clear that non-recourse means non-recourse and that litigation funding is a risky business. Draconian Contracts A second widely held concern is the use of contracts with draconian clauses. While the enforceability of such clauses is questionable at best, they still present a formidable nuisance value. Typical objectionable clauses are: Prior permission of funding company required to change attorneys High liquidated damages Waiver of all defenses Disclosure of non-discoverable information Most reputable companies, including CapTran have modified their contracts to address these concerns. Ethics George Kuhlman, ethics counsel for the American Bar Association, was quoted in Lawyers Weekly USA as stating: “The problem only comes in when lawyers are acquiring an interest in the subject matter of the litigation, but anybody can buy a piece of someone’s judgment. I don’t see any lawyer involvement so I don’t see any problem. This is a third party becoming involved; making sure people can survive their judgments.” With one exception, all Ethics Opinions of which we are aware find litigation funding ethical. Michigan finds contracts with certain clauses to be impermissible. State Bar of Michigan Ethics Committee Opinion RI-321, June 29, 2000 1. The ultimate control of the litigation may be transferred to the venture capital corporation due to the fact that the lawyer is permanently appointed to the case; 2. The original lawyer cannot be terminated without the venture capital corporations consent in light of the fact that on demand of the venture capital corporation all documents and things must be demanded by that group; and 3. Dreadlocks and Their Application in Society Today

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Arjun Mukherjee The dreadlock An Indian monk was slowly moving through the roads and people were looking at him with surprised interest. The dress, the attire, the posture were all alien to people of the western world but what attracted their attention most was the matted ropes of hair on the head of the monk. That is exactly what we call the dreadlock, hair on the head allowed to grow without cutting, combing or brushing to take the shape of matted ropes. Origin One of the universal phenomenons that have survived the onslaught of time, dreadlock has its origin rooted in the ancient Vedic Hindu culture. In the Hindu mythologies it is described that Lord Shiva took the force off the holy river Ganges coming to the earth on his dreadlock and thus saved the earth from destruction. Historically too the earliest evidence of dreadlock is found around 2500 years BC and have been mostly the favorite hair style of sages and monks. The immediate impact Hinduism had its influence on Buddhism, Jainism and even the Greek and Roman cultures of the past. In the Roman Celtic culture dreadlock was referred to as hair knotted like snakes. The royal families in ancient Egypt not only adopted the dreadlock but also used dreadlocked wigs as archeological discoveries have revealed. Other cultures Dreadlock was used not only in Egypt, Rome, and Greece but Germany, Mexico, Far East, Africa and several other countries. In Germany the Vikings, in Far East the Naga tribe, the Bishops of Jerusalem, Aztecs of Mexico were all well attached with Dreadlocks. Dreadlock was one of the most popular hair styles in these countries during the 14-16th century AD and they were also found with the Sufi Order in Senegal. The modern era During 1950s in Jamaica the people followers of Young Black Faith took heavily the style of dreadlocks following the cue of poor people there who had been using dreadlocks since the 1930s. It is also said that when Hindu and Naga saints started visiting Jamaica in pursuit of jobs in the 19th century, the dreadlock culture came up with them to Jamaica. A few others trace the origin to the Mau Mau rebels who were fighting against the British colonialism of the time. Why dreadlocks? Dreadlocks have been used by people coming from different cultural backgrounds with different reasons. Sometimes it is due to their religious and spiritual convictions like it is sacred among Hindu saints and monks and at other time social and political environments like used by the Mau Mau rebels. To avert the derogatory use of the term a new term has come up to replace the term dreadlock and it is often referred to as African Locks, the aim being to remove the feature of dreading from the terminology. The importance of dreadlocks in Eastern countries Dreadlocks are considered sacred by the Indian religious preachers since it has its origin with the holy Lord Shiva. In China too noblemen and ascetics used dreadlocks combined with long fingernails denouncing all earthly attachments. In some other Asian and African countries the dreadlock refers to the fear of the almighty. Dreadlocks and the western world today When the reggae music made a big stride during the 1980s, the dreadlocks used by the world famous singer and lyrist Bob Marley caught the imagination of the audience world over and there was a rush to wear dreadlocks. This became most popular among the African-Americanized people but white people did not remain far behind. Especially the people who raise their voice for anti-globalization, and the activists who support the cause of environment-protection find dreadlocks to their choice, a symbol of registering their protest against the possible evils of globalization and environmental pollution. Devotional Thought - Currents

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Faithe Thomas Have you ever been looking through the ads in Sundays paper or the windows in the mall and seen something you absolutely had to have? I have. Whatever that object is, my heart becomes set on obtaining it. Ill save my money, look for the lowest price, and finally purchase it. I am amazed at how committed I am at times to possessing that object. As though driven by a rushing current, my heart is carried along until the item is bought. And then the satisfaction doesnt even last long!! That driving current is not always toward a material object. Sometimes it flows toward an action. Have you ever quit a job? Remember that feeling of resolution, the feeling of determination that nothing can stop, once you had decided in your mind to quit? The action of quitting could not be denied once you set your heart on resigning. God made each one of us with that river of commitment. Sometimes that current takes me in good and godly directions, but not always. When my heart is set on the Lord and His word, that river moves me along His paths and in His will. When I allow my heart to be set on anything other than the Lord, I become carried away by pursuits that offer temporary satisfaction. Where is my heart set? How strong is my commitment to the Lord? Does it drive me to spend time with Him? I am reminded of Ezra in the Old Testament. He had found the secret of staying in those currents which led to God. The good hand of God was upon him, for Ezra had set his heart to study the law of Adonai and to practice it and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.
