Killer Techniques to Get a Job in the Film Industry!

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

By Ronald K. Armstrong Getting a job in the film industry can be very challenging. It is not like other industries, which are based upon how well your resume is written or how well you interview. Industry jobs are very lucrative and highly sought after. This is in part because they can be very rewarding experiences presenting the opportunity for travel, glamour and fame. Although not advertised, most of these positions are secured through social networks, referrals and word of mouth. So being a social butterfly can be to your advantage. Most people in the industry are looking to employ dependable, honest and hard working people. It is not an industry that is conducive to working with newcomers. When money is at stake and peoples reputation on the line, no one wants to try the new gal or guy. In addition, it can be an industry where the turnover rate is very high. Start out first with preparing a good resume one which focuses on your particular expertise. List previous productions youve worked on before. If you are just starting out try working on some student projects or intern positions to build your resume. You can get some great resume and interview tips at: www.careerstrategies.blogspot.com. Next, here are some killer techniques that will help you get your first gig. Develop a social network. These are usually friends and family members working in the industry or know of someone who is working. Keep in contact with them through email and phone calls. If there is a new project or open position they are likely to spread the word. A great way to make these contacts are at industry functions. Go to these events and collect as many email addresses as possible. The next day start emailing the people that youve met but DO NOT ask if they know of any gigs. Your goal is to develop a rapport so that they trust you. With that trust firmly established they will open up to you regarding important news and events. In recent years the Internet has really exploded with job opportunities. Do a Goggle search for film organizations and chat rooms. Sign up for as many as possible and make it a point to stay in touch with them on an ongoing basis. Another technique is to get a list of films about to go into production. The Ross Report and the Hollywood Reporter both carry complete lists. Create interesting looking post cards that highlight your expertise and field. Send the postcards out to the production manager and also to the production company on a monthly basis. The idea here is to keep your name in the spot light. As I said earlier the Internet is a really great place to find work. One of the best sites to visit is the Mayors Office in your city. When films come to your area they have to file for a permit. The Mayors Office then keeps records which they post on their site of available film jobs. Keep in mind not to put too much weight on the job itself rather look at it as a networking opportunity. You may need to take a job that pays nothing in order to make the necessary contacts. If you play your cards right one job can lead to another and so forth. Just make friends with as many people as possible but dont be intrusion. There are also job boards that specialize in film work. One great thing about them is that they allow you to set up a job agent. These virtual agents work by emailing you alerts whenever a new position is posted. You can sign up for one at www.rkacinemasociety.com or www.freecastingcalls.blogspot.com. Organizations can be an instrumental tool in your job search efforts. Not only will they invite you to important industry networking events but they can be the key to getting into an internship, mentorship and training program. I would also advise signing up with temp agencies as well. Now there are literally hundreds of agencies out there that specialize in everything from accounting to graphic arts positions. Find an agency that places for entertainment jobs and register with them. The trick here is to call the agency everyday asking if they have work for you. Dont wait for them to call you rather make yourself available to them. My last bit of advice would be to take the proactive approach. Create a great website and start emailing your URL out. This is part of your marketing campaign. Write interesting blurbs about yourself and the productions youve worked on. This will create a buzz about you and your service. Now heres the killer technique that is sure to help you land job after job. On your website create a job board and offer to post open job positions for free. When people start sending you breakdowns youll be in for sure. If you do this right you will be the first to get information on new jobs in your area. But to really make this last technique work be sure to share the information with your network. If you scratch their back theyll be sure to scratch yours by passing along any good gigs to you. Follow these tips and youll be getting the steady work youve always wanted! Ronald K. Armstrong is a noted author, filmmaker and recruiter. Getting Enough Sleep at Night May Just Help You Lose Weight

Friday, August 10th, 2007

By Meri Raffetto Eating the right foods and exercising regularly have been the hallmark of most weight management programs for the last 50 years. We are learning more and more about how other lifestyle factors affect weight such as stress, hormones, and other emotional triggers. Now it appears we can add sleep to the growing list of lifestyle factors that affect our weight. A recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine suggest that getting enough sleep may help with your weight loss efforts. The study found that sleep deprived volunteers (4 hours per night) had a 28% increase in a hormone called grehlin, which is an appetite stimulant. They also found an 18% decrease in leptin, a hormone that acts as an appetite suppressant, and 23% increase in overall appetite. To make matters worse the participants had an increase appetite specifically for calorie dense foods including sweets, salty and starchy foods. Although this was a small study, which will need more follow up; it is not the first to suggest how sleep affects weight. A 1999 University of Chicago study showed that sleep loss could affect the way we metabolize carbohydrates resulting in glucose intolerance and possibly leading to increased hunger and a slowed metabolism. It is also important to note that over the past 40 years, self-reported sleep duration in the U.S. has decreased by almost 2 hours according to Karine Spiegel, PhD and colleagues from University of Chicago in Illinois and overweight and obesity have been on the rise. More studies are needed to show that these results are reproducible and to demonstrate a cause and effect relationship. However, getting a good night sleep is good advice either way. There is no doubt about it that a lack of sleep interferes with our energy levels during the day and can cause us to skip our exercise routine because we are far too tired. How often has lack of sleep interfered with your activity level? This alone is good enough reason to add a good nights sleep (8-9 hours) to your weight management plan. How to Build an Online Pressroom that Grabs Media Attention and Promotes Your Authority

Monday, August 6th, 2007

By Christine OKelly An online press room is more comprehensive than an about us page or a press kit. Your pressroom is a set of documents and resources used by journalists learn more information about your company. Before building your press room it is essential to think like a journalist and offer information that is completely timely, relevant, and fluff-free. Think like a journalist Journalists constantly seek fresh story ideas need information rich content and credible sources to back their articles. They are often on a deadline and juggling numerous projects so offering quick access to the information they seek already gives you’re company and edge over the competition Usability Make your pressroom easy to find with a top level tab and organize the information within the press pages logically. The pages need to load quickly and contain with valuable and timely information. Journalists spend a lot of time online and will be more irritated by slow loading page than impressed by flashy graphics or PDF documents. Organizing your pressroom Create a page with html links with the topic title and a short description of the contents within the topic. Some topic titles to include are: Fact SheetFrequently asked questionsNews ClippingsPress releasesStory ideasCompany backgroundExecutive biosQuotesPhotos, graphics, and chartsImpartial source listContact information Stocking your online press room The items in the list below are suggestions for inclusion. Choose only the most relevant of these items for your press room if you have enough valuable content to create a section or combine similar items to limit lots of shallow categories and unnecessary clicking. Fact sheet Offer journalists brief snippets of highly relevant content about your products and services, reasons why your company stands apart from the competition, original research and study results, etc. Frequently Asked Questions Save journalists and yourself time by offering a list of questions frequently asked by the media. Update your FAQ on a regular basis when you come across new questions that aren’t included on the list. The more time you can save a journalist by providing information up front, the more likely your company will receive press over a competitor that forces a journalist to dig for information. Press Releases News outlets will often print your press releases verbatim or make a few edits to make them more relevant to their particular publication. This gives journalists a starting point for story ideas and offers some insight into angles that have already been covered. Be sure to date all of your press releases and don’t strip out contact information. Add the option for journalists to subscribe to your press releases for access to upcoming news topics. News Clippings Make it easy for journalists to find relative information about your company within the article. Organize the news clippings by date and include the publishing company’s name, the article title, a link to the full article, and a short paragraph from the article in which your company is mentioned. Television and radio coverage and interviews can also be sectioned off under news clippings. Include the media files as well as transcripts in addition to reference information. Story Ideas A common yet widely underused practice is to offer story ideas for journalists. No one knows your product and how it relates to the market better than you and you don’t need to wait for people to figure it out. Offering journalists powerful story ideas is beneficial for you, the journalist, and interested readers. Company Information If you already have an About Us page with company information, it’s fine to repeat some of the information in a context that is relevant to the press. Journalists will often comment on company history to give an article additional depth. Executive Bios Short, relevant, biographies about the founders or management team can be useful for journalists to insert throughout articles and back up claims or actions with facts from past successes and accomplishments. Quotes Quotes help bring articles to life and most journalists will include them to write a richer article. Offer a few quotes for journalists to include that help to simply explain the personal opinions and observations. Photos, graphics, and charts Make it simple for journalists to build a complete article with images and supporting graphical material. Offer relevant images of event photos, charts and graphs, website screenshots, and logos in a variety of file types and sizes. Impartial Source List List some names of authoritative individuals that journalists can contact for unbiased information. You may also wish to include a list of clients and contact information along with testimonials from satisfied customers. Media Contact Information Make it simple for journalists to get in touch with the correct people at your company. List contact information and short biographies of area experts within the company along with one main contact name and a personal email address (as opposed to press @). State the expected amount of time it will take you to respond as journalists are usually working with short deadlines and need to know if a contact is worth attempting. The Benefits of Seeing a Marriage Counselor …

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

By Shei Tan It’s strange how marriage counseling is often the last resort for a couple that is having martial problems. In many cases it should have been tried sooner. If like most people, you probably have this notion that marriage counseling will not help; afterall, we do not love each other anymore. Some couples, however, are surprised by the help that they receive from good marriage counseling. Let’s find out the real benefits of marriage counseling. Objective Perspective One of the benefits of seeing a marriage counselor is that you are taking your issues to an objective party; someone who can stand back and see the problems from a different perspective. Couples who are having difficulties can sometimes get so embroiled in their pain and anger that there is no way that they can think objectively anymore. This is where marriage counseling can be helpful. A good marriage counselor can separate the issues and get to the heart of the matter. A good marriage counselor is always in control and will not allow discussions to turn into shouting matches, and will always try to steer the couple toward beneficial ways of resolving problems. Privacy Reasons Many times in marriage counseling the counselor will take the time to speak to each person alone. This can be a good way to uncover issues that the couple may not feel comfortable discussing with each other. The office of a marriage counselor is a great place to say the things we may not have the courage to say to our spouse when we are alone. There should be no subject closed to discussion between a husband and a wife. If youve come to the point where you are afraid to saysomething to your spouse when you are alone, you probably need a marriage counselor more than you think. A Chance to TalkThe modern men and women has been cursed by busyness and it’s very common for married couple to stop communicating as a result of a hectic lifestyle or demanding career. Good communication is not automatic in any relationship, it takes time, effort and skills. These are the things not taught in school where most of us spent a large part of our life in. Well, a good marriage counselor can provide you with new strategies and skills for dealing with conflict and for daily interaction. You will learn to become genuinely interested in each other; take personal responsibility; take charge of your own feelings; put our own needs aside; listen to our partners point of view; and finally, reach a compromise. A Guide To Demographics

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

By Kevin Stith Every region possesses some particular characteristics based on the people who reside in it. These characteristics can reflect the regions economy, social behavior, social customs, geographical location, commerce, industrialization, religion, and other things. The term demographics is in essence a shortened form of what we can call ‘population characteristics’. Demographics include age, per capita income, mobility (in terms of travel time to work or number of vehicles available), educational and academic level of the people, value of ownership (that includes properties and assets like homes, apartments, garden and such others), status of employment and even the topography of the region. Demographics find its use in market research, opinion research, political research, and assessment of the changing trends of consumer behavior and its patterns. But demographics is best utilized by marketing managers, as the various characteristics of the people reflect their tastes and give an idea of the probability of the sales returns of a launched product in a given area. Demographics can be called an art and a science. Unlike demography, which puts emphasis on biological processes such as population dynamics, demographics try to grasp what people think and what they are willing to buy. Demographics can be studied under the following heads: 1) Demographic variables the groupings of the consumers and other such communities done by social and marketing analysts. The most frequently used ones are: age, sex, sexual orientation, family size, household size, family life cycle, income, occupation, education, home ownership, socioeconomic status, religion and nationality. 2) Demographic profiles definition of several demographic variables. 3) Demographic trends predictability of the demographic shifts. Demographics provides detailed information on Demographics, City Demographics, Census Demographics, American Demographics and more. Demographics is affiliated with Buy Business Mailing Lists. Ultrasound Pictures & Journaling

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

By Vera Raposo The instructions read: “Drink 800 ounces of water, then wait 45 minutes and don’t use the bathroom prior to your scheduled ultrasound. You must have a full bladder.” Say what?! First the baby is already kicking your bladder, and then you’re supposed to drink, drink, drink and then hold it? That must be some kind of sick joke. Unfortunately it’s no joke. Any woman who has endured the experience of getting a baby ultrasound picture will tell you that’s the real deal. Apparently your innards need to be extended in order for the sonographer to better view your unborn baby. Notwithstanding the first time you see your little miracle moving, sucking her (or his) thumb and sometimes waving, you will forget all about the fact that your teeth are floating. In fact, what you will be feeling and thinking is an indescribable experience. As soon as you get home, you will want to journal as much as you can remember: What were you initial impressions? Was it what you thought it would be like? Did seeing your baby somehow make you love your child even more than you thought possible? Even though you knew you were going to be a mom, did seeing your baby on the screen solidify that fact? Did you find out the gender? Did baby cooperate? Or was junior shy? You will be given a couple of different photos documenting your child’s first film appearance. Don’t let your baby’s first promo pictures end up in a drawer. Put them in your Ultrasound Scrapbook. Depending on an array of variables, you may have more then one set of baby ultrasound pictures to add to your scrap book. If you have your first set taken at week 21, and then another ultrasound done at week 38 you’ll have an excellent comparison to show how much your baby is developing. Years later your child will love looking at his skeleton. Try to wait long enough to put your latest baby ultrasound pictures into a scrap book before you show off the most recent installment in your pregnancy saga. Your coworkers will be more apt to give your photos more than simple a cursory glance. Even if you create journal entries and a scrap book merely for your own benefit, you will be glad you did. Most mothers will tell you that they had a touch of “pregnancy brain” (aka forgetfulness). You want to make sure you don’t omit any chapters in this beautiful journey. Vera Raposo has been scrapbooking since her oldest child was 5. With tons of scrapbooking tips and ideas, Vera is now sharing some of her best scrapbooking ideas on her radio show at http://www.scrapperstalkradio.com.
