Buttons, Baubles & Bows: Using Your Hot Glue Gun to Liven Up Household Accessories
By Lisa Koosis Whether it’s bland, terra cotta flowerpots or cookie tins that have been emptied of their contents, many a household has items in need of a little creative TLC. So before you throw out that boring box or ho-hum serving tray, think about jazzing it up with your hot glue gun and a little old-fashioned creativity. A hot glue gun can be a wonderful tool for creative projects. Those that can switch from high temperature to low temperature are particularly versatile for household craft projects. Take stock of things in your household that could stand a little creative injection. Possibilities include flowerpots, baskets, serving trays, wooden picture frames, cookie or tea tins, boxes. Use your imagination. Perhaps you want to turn your old tea kettle into a centerpiece or whip a bland-looking table lamp into a work of art. Once you’ve decided on the item in need of attention, you’ll want to consider just how you want to jazz it up. Perhaps it might need just a touch of something to give it that pop. For example, a basket may need nothing more than a pretty bow hot-glued to the handle. Other items may call for the full treatment, particularly those that have surface damage or some other flaw to be covered up. Great ideas for decorative add-ons include old buttons–or new ones. Many fabric stores and craft stores sell bags of assorted buttons, including packages that are themed. Think antique or nautical. Silk flowers are another item that’s perfect for hot-gluing. Blooms are usually quite easily separated from their stems so that they can be attached to your item to be decorated. How about tiny mushroom birds or butterflies made from feathers, both of which are readily available at craft stores. Sequins, wooden and glass beads, and other jewelry-making items also make great, often overlooked, trims for wooden boxes and trays and flowerpots. Or consider pieces of mosaic tile or sea glass. Ultimately, the limit of what you can do is the limit of your budget and imagination. Take an afternoon to wander the aisles of your favorite craft store for inspiration. Explore garage sales for finds with the potential for pizzazz. You might find yourself surprised as to what you can create with a little time and a whole lot of heart.
